Sealant Placement โ€” EFDA Certification

Learn Today's Sealant Placement course provides dental assistants with the board-approved Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) certification to place dental sealants under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. This hands-on course combines foundational theory with real chairside clinical practice โ€” giving every participant the skills and confidence to perform sealant procedures correctly from their very first day back in the operatory.

Dental sealants are one of the most effective preventive treatments available for pediatric and at-risk adult patients, and expanding this function to EFDA-certified dental assistants significantly increases a practice's capacity to deliver preventive care without placing additional demands on the hygiene schedule. Dental offices that invest in sealant placement EFDA certification consistently report better preventive outcomes and more efficient patient flow.

Participants will learn proper tooth isolation techniques, surface preparation and acid etching, sealant material selection and application, occlusal evaluation and adjustment, and patient follow-up documentation. Learn Today's small class format ensures every student receives direct, individualized instruction and sufficient clinical hands-on time. This course is available at your dental office location anywhere in Oklahoma or Missouri, or at a scheduled classroom session.

The Value of Sealant Placement EFDA Certification

In Oklahoma and Missouri, dental assistants must hold a current EFDA expanded function certification to legally place sealants. Without this certification, performing the procedure creates legal and regulatory exposure for both the assistant and the supervising dentist. Learn Today's board-approved course eliminates that risk and positions your team for expanded preventive care delivery immediately upon completion.

Sealant placement is also a visible, tangible skill that dental employers recognize and reward. EFDA-certified dental assistants who can perform sealant procedures command higher hourly rates, take on more clinical responsibility, and advance faster in their careers. This certification is a direct investment in your professional future.

Important Prerequisite: Coronal Polishing Permit Required

Before enrolling in the Sealant Placement course, dental assistants must already hold a valid Oklahoma dental assistant permit with Coronal Polishing listed as an active expanded function. A pass letter alone is not sufficient โ€” your current permit must show "YES" next to Coronal Polishing. If you still need to earn your Coronal Polishing certification, Learn Today offers that course as well. Call us to plan the right sequence for your EFDA training.

The Sealant Placement course exam requires placing sealants on six permanent teeth. Sealants may only be placed on permanent teeth โ€” not primary (baby) teeth โ€” and the teeth used for the exam must be free of restoration on the surfaces being sealed. The clinical exam involves a qualifying patient whose exam teeth meet specific criteria for intact occlusal surfaces.

Board Compliance Note

This course meets Oklahoma and Missouri dental board CE requirements for EFDA sealant placement expanded function certification. Coronal Polishing EFDA permit is a required prerequisite. Upon completion, participants receive documentation suitable for permit update and board compliance submissions.
